Government of India's Military Operations!

The Indian Armed Forces is the overall unified military of the Republic of India encompassing the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard and various other inter-service institutions. The President of India serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. With a combined total strength of over 4,768,407 personnel, it is world's 4th largest while with an estimated total active force of 1,325,000 personnel, India maintains the world's third largest armed forces.


Military operation is the coordinated military actions of a state in response to a developing situation. These actions are designed as a military plan to resolve the situation in the state's favor. Operations are referred to by a code name for the purpose of security.

Operation Trident and Python
Operation Trident and its follow-up Operation Python were naval offensive operations launched on Pakistan's port city of Karachi by the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The operation was a high time response to Operation Chengiz Khan by Pakistani army. India celebrates its Navy Day annually on 4 December to mark this operation.

Operation Blue Star
Indian military operation, ordered by Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, under the pretext of removing Sikh separatists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The Sikhs, led by Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, were accused of amassing weapons in the Sikh temple.

Operation Woodrose
A military operation carried out by the Indian government in the months after Operation Blue Star to “prevent the outbreak of widespread public protest” in the state of Punjab. The government arrested all prominent members of the largest Sikh political party, the Akali Dal, and banned the All India Sikh Students Federation, a large students’ union.

Operation Meghdoot
The name given to the attack launched by the Indian Military to capture the Siachen Glacier in the disputed Kashmir region. The capture of Siachen would enable the enemy to pose a dangerous threat to our lines of communication between Srinagar and Leh. Launched on 13 April 1984, this military operation was unique as the first assault launched in the world’s highest battlefield.

Operation Brasstacks
It was a military exercise undertaken by the Indian Army in Rajasthan during November 1986 and March 1987. It was one of the largest mobilizations of armed forces in the Indian subcontinent and regarded as one of the most critical points in the relationship between India and Pakistan with regard to nuclear war.

Operation Pawan
Operations by the Indian Peace Keeping Force to take control of Jaffna from the LTTE in late 1987 to enforce the disarmament of the LTTE as a part of the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord.

Operation Viraat, Operation Trishul and Operation Checkmate
Initiated immediately prior to the elections in the North eastern provinces, the aim of these operations was to destroy the Tigers' [LTTE] capacity to hinder the electoral process, which they had called to boycott. It ended in an IPKF victory. While the Op Viraat and Trishul were launched in April 1988 in Northern Sri Lanka the Op Checkmate was launched in June in the Vadamarachi area of Northern Srilanka.

Operation Vijay
The name itself implies the successful Indian operation to push back the infiltrators from the Kargil Sector, in the 1999 Kargil War.

Operation Safed Sagar
It was the codename assigned to the Indian Air Force’s strike to support the Ground troops during Operation Vijay that was aimed to flush out Regular and Irregular troops of the Pakistani Army from vacated Indian Positions in the Kargil sector along the Line of Control.

Following the attack on Indian Parliament and amid calls from the United States and the United Nations (UN) to exercise restraint, India mobilized and deployed its troops to Kashmir and the Indian part of the Punjab in what was India’s largest military mobilization since the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.

Operation Black Tornado
India’s National Security Guards (NSG) conducted Operation Black Tornado to flush out the remaining attackers of Mumbai 26/11; it resulted in the death of the last remaining attackers at the Taj hotel and ending all fighting in the attacks. (Called Op Cyclone as well!)

The Indian Armed Forces launched an effort, Operation Safe Homecoming, to bring Indian nationals from Libya during the 2011 Libyan uprising.

Operation Rahat,
Operation Surya Hope
It was launched to rescue stranded pilgrims in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh after heavy rains wreaked havoc in northern India on June 16. Operation Rahat was the name given to the Indian Air Force's rescue operations while India Army's response was named Operation Surya Hope. It is also called Operation Ganga Prahar where the army aids flood affected.
